Dr. Anurita Kapur was invited to and attended the Shri GANESH UTSAV CELEBRATION.  The Festival had Bhajans,
Ghazals and concluded by puja and prasad.
Anurita explains about Lord Ganesh:
Lord Ganesh, in Sanskrit:  गणेश also known as Ganapati and Vinayaka is a widely worshipped deity in the Hindu pantheon.  Lord
Ganesh consorts are:
Budhi, Sidhi and Ridhi.  His image is found throughout India and Nepal.  Hindu sects worship him regardless
of affiliations.  Devotion to Ganesh is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists, and beyond India.  Lord Ganesh is one of the
most prominent deities in Hinduism. Ganesh has the unique distinction that his name is always invoked before any other God’s
name in any prayer service.
Lord Ganesh received this distinction as a blessing from his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Lord Ganesa is designated
as the chief (-eesha) of all of Lord Shiva’s ganas (servers) – hence his name, Ganesh.
Although he is known by many attributes, Lord Ganesh's elephant head makes him easy to identify.  Ganesh is widely revered as the
remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom.  As the god of beginnings, he is
honoured at the start of rituals and ceremonies. Ganesh is also invoked as patron of letters and learning during writing sessions.
Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography.
Ganesha emerged as a distinct deity in the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta Period, although he inherited traits from Vedic
and pre-Vedic precursors.  He was formally included among the five primary deities of Smartism (a Hindu denomination) in the 9th
century. A sect of devotees called the Ganapatya arose, who identified Ganesha as the supreme deity.  The principal scriptures
dedicated to Ganesha are the Ganesha Purana, the Mudgala Purana, and the Ganapati Atharvashirsa.
In the Burmese language, Ganesha is known as Maha Peinne, derived from Pali Mahā Wināyaka. The widespread name of Ganesh in
Thailand is Phra Phikhanet or Phra Phikhanesuan, both of which are derived from Vara Vighnesha and Vara Vighneshvara
respectively, whereas the name Khanet (from Ganesh) is rather rare.
In Sri Lanka in the North-Central and North Western areas with pre dominantly Buddhist population, Ganesh is known as Aiyanayaka
Deviyo while in other Singhala buddhist areas he is known as Gana deviyo.
Before the arrival of Islam, Afghanistan had close cultural ties with India, and the adoration of both Hindu and Buddhist deities was
practiced.  Examples of sculptures from the 5th to the 7th centuries have survived, suggesting that the worship of Ganesh was then
in vogue in the region.
Ganesh appears in Mahayana Buddhism, in the form of the Buddhist god Vināyaka.  His image appears in Buddhist sculptures
during the late Gupta period.  As the Buddhist god Vināyaka, he is often shown dancing. This form, called Nṛtta Ganapati, was
popular in northern India, later adopted in Nepal, and then in Tibet.  In Nepal, the Hindu form of Ganesh, known as Heramba, is
popular; he has five heads and rides a lion.  Tibetan representations of Ganesha show ambivalent views of him.  A Tibetan
rendering of Ganapati is tshogs bdag.  In one Tibetan form, he is shown with Mahākāla, (Shiva) a popular Tibetan deity.  Other
depictions show him as the Destroyer of Obstacles, and sometimes dancing.  Ganesha appears in China and Japan in forms that
show distinct regional character.  In northern China, the earliest known stone statue of Ganesh carries an inscription dated to 531.
In Japan, where Ganesh is known as Kangiten, the Ganesh cult was first mentioned in 806.
The canonical literature of Jainism does not mention the worship of Ganesha.  However, Ganesha is worshipped by most Jains, for
whom he appears to have taken over certain functions of Kubera.  Jain connections with the trading community support the idea
that Jainism took up Ganesha worship as a result of commercial connections.  The earliest known Jain Ganesh statue dates
to about the 9th century.  A 15th-century Jain text lists procedures for the installation of Ganapati images.  Images of Ganesh appear
in the Jain temples of Rajasthan and Gujara.

Shree Ganesh Mantra: Shree Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada॥
In Sanskrit:
श्री वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्य कोटी समप्रभा निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्व-कार्येशु सर्वदा॥
Translation of the Mantra:  O Lord Ganesha of the curved trunk and massive body, the one whose splendor is equal to millions of
Suns, please bless me to that I do not face any obstacles in my endeavors.

Dr. Anurita Kapur celebrated Diwali Festival in 2010.  Happy Diwali!!! - Dipavali ki Hardik Shubkamnayen!!! Festival
of lights and firecrackers.  Diwali, also called Dipavali or the "Festival of Lights", is an ancient Hindu festival
celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over
ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.  The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a
five day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu
Lunisolar month Kartik. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November.

Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate and decorate their homes.  On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new
clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family
puja typically to Goddess Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and prosperity.  After puja (prayers), fireworks follow,
then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends.
Diwali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated.

Diwali is an important festival for Hindus. The name of festive days as well as the rituals of Diwali vary significantly
among Hindus, based on the region of India.  In many parts of India, the festivities start with Dhanteras, followed
by Naraka Chaturdasi.

Raksha Bandhan Celebration.  Dr. Anurita Kapur performed the Raksha Bandhan rites after prayers. She took her raksha bandhan thali with
diyas she put teeka her brother and tied rakhees to the wrist and fed sweets.  Anurita's brother in return gave her blessings.
Anurita also tied rakhees to other community brothers out of respect.

Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally means "the tie or knot of protection".  It is an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrates the love
and duty between brothers and their sisters.  The sister performs a Rakhi ceremony, then prays to express her love and her wish for the
well being of her brother; in return, the brother ritually pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is one of
the several occasions in which family ties are affirmed in India.

Raksha Bandhan is an ancient festival, and has many myths and historic legends linked to it. For example, the Rajput queens practised the
custom of sending rakhi threads to neighbouring rulers as token of brotherhood.  On Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a rakhi (sacred thread)
on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect
her. The festival is also an occasion to celebrate brother-sister like family ties between cousins or distant family members, sometimes
between biologically unrelated men and women.  To many, the festival transcends biological family, brings together men and women
across religions, diverse ethnic groups and ritually emphasizes harmony and love. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Śrāvaṇa,
and typically falls in August every year.

Later on the same day, Anurita also attended another Dipavali Event at South Street Seaport in Manhattan,
New York City in 2010.
